Chiswick House
Description
Built by the third Earl of Burlington in 1729 to showcase his art collection and to enthral his guests, the house continues to display many spectacular works of art and provides a stunning venue for entertaining. Chiswick House is the first and one of the finest examples of neo-Palladian design in England. Inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome and 16th Century Italy, the third Earl of Burlington built the house as a homage to Renaissance architect Palladio. Never intended as a private residence, Chiswick House remains a bold architectural experiment; a showcase for art collections, and a venue for entertaining. The gardens at Chiswick House have been loved for centuries. With their combination of grand vistas and hidden pathways, architectural delights and a dazzling array of flowers, shrubs and specimen trees, they create a unique oasis in this corner of London.
